Our World Neighborhood Charter School opened in fall, 2002 resulting from the effort of the parents living in the Long Island City-Astoria-Woodside neighborhoods, outgrowth as the Astoria Parents Network.
The school is located across the street from the Museum of the Moving Image, providing education with the foundation of rigorous liberal arts education within a remarkable environment of cultural diversity. Children study an area of the world in depth through strong social studies curriculum, called "Paragon," centers on "units".
Interested in child-centered models of instruction based on cooperative, active learning and parent involvement, founders adopted a comprehensive model managed by Mosaica Inc. Education, through an integrated study of history, geography, literature, social sciences, science, math, art, music, technology and Spanish.
With a relatively small special education population, Our World Neighborhood Charter School was featured in New York City's Best Public Middle Schools and the New York City's Best Public Elementary Schools as of December 2003. |
