Our building, which is currently expanding due to a large construction project, is home to nearly 1900 students in grades nine through twelve and over 200 staff members. At all hours of the day and night, the building is alive with the sound of people working, playing, laughing and enjoying all kinds of educational activities, athletic events, musical performances, art exhibitions and the like.
Our large Commons area in the center of the school is the heart of Northport High School life. Four “wells”, each dedicated to one of the grade levels are filled with students who are completing homework, talking with each other, planning activities and making the place special. On many occasions, there are activities in the Commons that involve displays of student work, interesting demonstrations and fund raising efforts of the many clubs, college and career fairs, and informational sessions by outside groups and agencies. Everyday, the student run radio station plays music selected and introduced by students in our Radio Club, WNPT. The Commons comes alive early in the morning and continues to serve as the hub of the school until the late afternoon when much of the activity slows.
During an average day, students and staff can be seen reviewing classroom lessons, studying for exams, working together on club initiatives, planning field trips, or working on individual projects. Our dedicated teaching staff works incredibly hard to provide exceptional teaching reflective of the best practices in education and also to provide as many extra help opportunities for students who are struggling and for students who wish to be challenged at higher levels. Some students can be found working with teachers well before first period, as well as throughout the day, after school, in the evenings and sometimes on weekends. Our teachers’ commitment to our students is what sets them apart from many other faculties across the state.
Northport High School prides itself on a course catalog that boasts nearly four hundred courses. In addition to the major subject areas of English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Languages and Physical Education, students may opt to take classes in Art, Music, Family and Consumer Science, Technology, and Business. The variety of courses and levels of these courses are without fail the most impressive aspect of Northport High School. A few examples include three levels of full-year Sculpture courses, a comprehensive law program with nine elective courses available to students, an Early Childhood Education program, Advanced Project Adventure classes in Physical Education, and three levels of full year Science Research. If students wish to specialize while in high school our school offers the Academy of Finance program, the Academy of Information Technology Program. If a student wishes to challenge himself or herself, our school offers the International Baccalaureate program, over nineteen Advanced Placement courses and Project Advance courses in English and Computer Engineering. During “Open House”, when parents attend to learn about their child’s school year, it is not uncommon to hear a parent ask, “Where can I sign up for something like this?” It truly is a special place. |
