Curriculum revision and improvements are ongoing as the Longwood Middle School continues to meet or exceed State Education Department mandates. The goal of the teacher and other staff members is to provide all students who attend a mastery of basic reading, writing and computational skills that are the foundation of all other learning. Longwood Middle School staff applies interdisciplinary team education methods in grade level 6th and in the 7th students learn under a departmentalized program. The Longwood Middle School staff is very creative and they have developed an Academic Interdisciplinary Period or (AIP) that eliminates the need for many of the pullout programs and provides an interlude for students to focus on their special interests or needs. A particular concern at Longwood Middle School is that students exhibit the ability to understand the writing process and display mastery before they graduate and advance to high school. Other top concerns are the refinement of reading, listening, and critical thinking skills. Education is geared toward areas that include problem solving, computer literacy, technology, hands-on science exploration, and creative expression. Programs have been developed in each area that allow for student achievement, thereby strengthening self-esteem. Longwood Middle School just happens to be located in the Longwood Central School District which has been called one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” so students are really fortunate to get involved in a solid, sequential study in instrumental, vocal, and general music.
