What's the result when you take a top notch basic instructional program, a proactive principal who defines his staff "as the finest group of professionals you can get," dedicated parents, an environment of support and encouragement and a dose of humor?
It's Camp Avenue School, the district's venerable point of origination, some 77 years old (or young!), part of the childhood memories of generations of North Merokeans, a dependable Merrick Avenue landmark.
Even more dependable is the learning going on inside. The longtime excellence of Camp Avenue's basic program has enabled its children to excel in whatever challenges have come from the State of New York and to prepare themselves for a world that's changing exponentially.
"You can't just teach facts. We try to convey education and learning as a lifelong process," says Mr. Solnick. "Problem solving, analysis, decision-making and thinking skills will help them succeed in a world where yesterday's facts are being disproved daily."
"We've set our goals, particularly in reading and writing this year, so everyone can grow and perform better," he emphasizes. Teachers are getting training in writing, helping to move every child toward mastery. It's a staff that blends different levels of experience and a variety of talents that encourages their own continued learning too.
Underpinning the academic and character development is the sense of comfort the children derive from the school's familial atmosphere, where parents are welcomed as active and essential participants. It's no wonder that years later, graduates remember their Camp Avenue days. |
